As I continue this work I am introducing more detail and textures into my figures to give emphasis to their physicality. Subsequently I’ve been thinking about the twilight sky in the new works as a symbol for an in-between state like the moments just before or after dreaming.
Thinking of line as a representation of the physical. i have been making drawings that insert a vulnerable nude figure into a larger narrative scene complete with personal symbols like birds and starry skies.
I am re-exploring symbols that have appeared in my art over time. This recent body of work reexamines the motif of birds. For myself, birds represent the fragile and the vulnerable- yet their awkwardness on the ground is countered with the unique ability of flight. I often think about this shift in perspective- flight being a feeling associated with dreaming.
I'm taking pieces of the natural world and thinking of their relationship within a cerebral space. These areas are left undefined and reference both natural patterns as well as motifs which suggest interiors such as doors, windows and stairways. The paintings are crossed with more pronounced lines that reach out to defined the spaces they navigate.
